"I am really glad that I have my CIH because… when I discovered industrial hygiene in 1983 I found what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I studied environmental chemistry and physics in college, but knew I didn’t want to work in a lab. About 3 years out of school I was working as a plant emissions source testing specialist and lab analyst for an environmental firm not really sure what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Then I met and started working with industrial hygienists. I was hooked immediately.

Here was a profession that required knowledge in many diverse areas to help solve real life problems – control of chemical and physical hazards, indoor air quality, troubleshooting and designing ventilation, and technical air monitoring (plant emissions testing on the micro scale). I got to dabble in a lot of different areas – analytical chemistry, physics, engineering, instrumentation, electronics, toxicology, biology, microbiology, audiology, ergonomics, technical training, psychology and behavioral science, plus I got to deal with people from all walks of life.

Over my career as a consulting hygienist, plant hygienist, and eventually a manager, I’ve conducted exposure monitoring in the studio of a famous Hollywood special effects artist, monitored the crew compartment of an M-1 Abrams tank, tested air emissions from automobile air bag chemical inflators, and assisted in forensic investigations at airplane crash sites and in hospital operating rooms. I’ve conducted IH evaluations in private homes, universities, secondary schools, manufacturing plants, dielectric testing labs, hospital labs, pharmaceutical labs, food labs, morgues, New York City newspapers, Smithsonian museums, chemical plants, chicken farms, and nuclear power plants. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with thousands of people – homemakers, CEO’s, plant operators, pipefitters, accountants, engineers, artists, electricians, chemists, astronauts, curators, writers, architects, nurses, and MD’s.

It certainly didn’t hurt that I received a 30% pay raise almost overnight when I became certified almost 28 years ago, but much more importantly I found a life’s calling that I truly love.

I am a CIH and that means something special to me. "
